Eike Batista has been transferred to a high security prison in Rio de Janeiro. The former Brazilian oil and mining mogul was arrested upon his arrival from New York.
The once Brazil’s deluxe man, was blamed of paying millions of dollars inform of inducements to secure deals with Rio’s state administration, reports BBC
However, Mr Batista has refuted any illegal activities charged against him.
He has said that he will even help the establishments in their labors to tackle bribery which he says is prevalent in Brazil.
Before entering the plane and turning himself in to the law enforcement agencies, Mr Batista said he was going back to Brazil to sanitize his tainted name.
“I’m at the disposal of the courts,” he confirmed to the O Globo newspaper.. “As a Brazilian, I am doing my duty.”
If Batista had a university degree, he would have been sent to an exceptional prison wing, this is according to the Brazilian law. However, since he dropped out before finishing his University engineering degree in Germany, he will then be attending his time in a usual cell with 6 other prisoners at Bangu house of correction.
It is reported that many Brazilian prisons are congested and controlled by criminal bands.
Rio authorities however deny the said claims at Bangu.
Batista was on Monday morning met by police department as he landed in Rio. He was then accompanied off the plane and firstly taken to the Ary Franco penitentiary in Rio.
After going through medical examinations and having his hair cut, he was transported to the tight security penitentiary in the suburbs of Rio.
Mr Batista was confirmed an escapee by Brazilian bureaucrats after police invaded his estate in Rio de Janeiro the previous week and learned that he had left for New York just hours prior.
Daniel Gallas, BBC South America business communicator says there was much rumor on whether Batista would get back to Brazil or he would have used his German visa to run away to Europe.
