NEW DELHI: Coming down heavily on the tax evaders, the Income tax department has tracked down more than 58.95 lakh people who have not filed their returns despite having an obligation to do so, as per the law. So far, the I-T department has been successful in forcing more than 11 lakh tax evaders to file their income-tax returns for the Assessment year 2014-15.
The Income Tax Department has been successful in this regard by organizing a special drive called as ‘Non-filers management system’ aimed at identifying those who forget or just skip filing their tax returns, by utilizing technology intelligence tools.
An official from the income tax department said that the drive was intended at bringing more number of eligible tax-payers to file their returns by the end of this financial year. “We are working on it. So far, more than 11 lakh citizens have filed their I-T returns and efforts are being made to reach others. We have sent SMSs and emails to all those who have filed their I-T returns earlier and have skipped the same for the Assessment year 2014-15″, the official informed.
The department has also passed on the list of new tax payers to their regional offices to ensure that they do not skip filing their returns in the coming years.
