The International Police organization, Interpol has suspended a joint program between the Interpol and the FIFA , against Anti-match-fixing. The Interpol has taken the decision over the corruption allegations in the FIFA governing body.
The Interpol has decided to freeze the 20million Euros, donated by the FIFA over the “Integrity in Sport” program. The agreement was to fight against match fixing and illegal gambling. Juergen Stock, the head of Interpol, said in a statement that the Interpol has decided to suspend the agreement in the wake of the corruption investigations in the FIFA governing body. Mr. Stock said, “we are committed to the agreement. However, with the present situation it is not fair for us to still hang on to the agreement.”
FIFA is being investigated by the authorities of the US and the Switzerland under the allegations of corruption and bribery.
Interpol opined that all the bodies which goes into an agreement, must obey a certain principles and guidelines. It also added that it has no meaning when one of the bodies, which are in a mutual agreement deters the agreement’s moral values. ” The agreement between us states that the Football governing body must abide by the principles, aims and activities of the Interpol”, Interpol said in a statement, the BBC News reports.
A spokesperson from the FIFA, said that the organization was disappointed of the decision taken by the Interpol. ” The investigations in the FIFA governing body has nothing to do with the Anti-match-fixing program. The results of the program mainly depends upon the cooperation between the FIFA and Interpol and not on the investigations being carried in the FIFA. The decision taken by the Interpol will negatively impact on the fight over the transnational issue of Match fixing and gambling”, the Spokesperson for FIFA said.
