What Season 6 of Game of Thrones Left us With
The sixth season of Game of Thrones concluded two weeks ago on HBO, and what a finish it was! Margaery, who I thought would find a way to trump Cersei was blown away (literally) and Cersei finally had her dream come true – to rule all of the Seven Kingdoms. Daenerys set sail to Westeros to take over the throne that was usurped from her father with her army comprising of the fearless Unsullied, the vast horde of Dothraki, Varys and Tyrion and her three full-grown dragons. But the best revelation of all was this – Jon Snow is half a Stark, true, but not Ned’s son. He is the son of Lyanna Stark and possibly, Rhaegar Targaryen. So Daenerys may no more be the last surviving dragon of House Targaryen. She has family after all – her own nephew – who by all rights is the true heir of the kingdom.
So what can we expect season 7 of Game of Thrones to be like?
Daenerys Targeryn, The First of her Name?
The power grab made by Cersei Lannister to become a Queen in the final episode of season 6 of Game of Thrones was intense; she fought all her life trying to make her father realize that she was far more cunning and worthy of his inheritance than either of her brothers were, she was married to a king and was the mother of two kings after that, and she had to constantly ward of powerful houses and their schemes to continue exerting her influence on the Iron Throne. But to become a Queen in her own right required Cersei to lose all three of her children. After that, there was nothing stopping her from donning the regal wardrobe, placing a crown upon her head and walking the entire length of the Great Hall, to seat herself on the Iron Throne. Minor inconveniences, like Maester Pycelle were dealt with quietly through Maester Qyburn’s minions. Cersei seizing the throne is indicative of a ploy she has nurtured for a while, so when Daenerys finally lands in Westeros in the next season, what will the face-off be like?
I imagine that Daenerys wouldn’t land in King’s Landing directly. Remember Stannis’ fate when he attempted to take on King’s Landing? With Tyrion on her side, Daenerys is bound to know how unsuccessful a direct attempt is likely to be. So will she first land somewhere else, take on the rest of the kingdom and then head out to King’s Landing to meet Cersei? Will the two women, both aggressive, both having made sacrifices to get to the throne, have a final showdown? And what role is Jamie Lannister likely to play? Will he stand by his sister, like he always has, and see Cersei fight to keep the throne? Or will he instead choose to go over to Daenerys’ side? Maybe, just maybe, he would stab Cersei in the back the same way he stabbed the Mad King Aerys and as a farewell say, “The things I do for love”.
Jon Snow = Jon Targaryen?
What we do know, thanks to Bran’s time-travelling ability, is that Jon is not Ned’s bastard. Here we feel sorry for all the times that Catelyn gave him grief over what she saw as a betrayal on Ned’s part for having fathered a son on some unknown woman. Jon instead turned out to be the son of Lyanna, Ned’s sister, who was once betrothed to Robert Baratheon and was raped by Rhaegar. What we don’t know definitively is whether Jon is also Rhaegar’s son, which would then make him a Targaryen. But among the fans of Game of Thrones an even larger question looms – is it possible that Rhaegar never forced himself on Lyanna, but instead, loved her truly, possibly eloped with her and that Jon may be a legitimate child? By that logic, Jon Snow a.k.a. Jon Targaryen would be the rightful ruler of Westeros.
But who is to tell Jon that? Both the people who know the truth about Jon – Jon’s mother Lyanna and Ned Stark – are dead. The only one who knows the truth is Bran, but him being a cripple, what are the chances he will make it back to Winterfell to tell Jon about his true parentage? And even if he does get back to Winterfell, will Jon still be there? After being declared as the King in the North, Jon has every reason to seek vengeance from the Lannisters, backed by his bannermen and the wildlings. What if Jon departs for Kings’ Landing before ever finding that the Iron Throne is his by right? What if Ygritte’s words continue to haunt Jon even in the next season, “You know nothing Jon Snow”.
The Third Head of the Dragon?
One = Daenerys Targaryen. Known.
Two = Jon Snow. Possibly.
Three = ?
Tyrion. That’s whom I’d like to see. That’s whom a lot of fans would like to see as the third head of the dragon. Game of Thrones has always been an unpredictable show; a prophecy was made to Daenerys in the House of the Undying, “The dragon has three heads”. Daenerys has three dragons. If every dragon were to have a rider, Daenerys is clearly going to be one, Jon possibly another, but who is likely to be third rider? It could be Bran, as he can change skins and take over the minds and body of animals and people, maybe Arya even, for she is now no one, but neither Bran nor Arya are Targaryens; our favorite vote would be – Tyrion.
Tyrion has always been the one to be underestimated; everyone mocks him, his father never loved him, even saying that Tyrion was no son of his. What if Tyrion is truly not Tywin’s son, but the son of Joanna Lannister (Tywin’s wife) and the Mad King Aerys? What if the reason Tywin hated Tyrion was not because he was born grotesque or his mother died birthing him, but because Tyrion reminded Tywin of the wrongful union of the king with his wife?
Dragons have always fascinated Tyrion and in one of the episodes on season 6, he actually manages to tame them, or at least gets them to listen to him. That is an achievement in itself, considering how moody the dragons can be and how they sometimes snap at Daenerys herself. If Tyrion turned out to be a Targaryen that would explain why the dragons listened to him.
It would be something to watch season 7 of Game of Thrones next year, as we find out more about the Targaryens, who the three heads of the dragons are and what the answer to the ever elusive question, one that has been on every fan’s mind since the first book written by George R.R. Martin came out, is – who will finally bring peace, rule all of Westeros and ultimately win this Game of Thrones?
