The rules and regulations in healthcare can frequently overwhelm even the most experienced medical professional. One man has come to the conclusion that a team approach may be the best way to protect personal interests and get healthy.
Leslie Michelson, author of “The Patient’s Playbook,” said that Americans do a good job of planning for retirement, vacations and saving for a child’s education. But rarely is there a person who plans for a serious diagnosis.
One out of every six patients in the United States gets care at a less-than-stellar hospital, according to a Healthgrades survey. Not receiving the best care possible could not only escalate your risk of medical mistakes, but could also increase your risk of death.
Michelson stated that before we become ill, everyone thinks that there’s a healthcare system out there that is suddenly going to gear into action to support them. But that is not the case.
After getting treatment for a rare disease himself, Michelson wrote his book and has made it his mission to assist others in receiving the best care possible – regardless of how much money they have.
The first step is finding a primary care provider who suits your needs. Michelson suggests finding a physician you’re comfortable talking to and who is comfortable talking to you.
The second step is to know your medical background and give this information to all your doctors. Michelson recommends gathering and organizing your medical records to be prepared if an emergency happens.
Michelson says to record your family history. We’re learning more and more about the value of heredity and genetics in disease, and your doctors will benefit from knowing that information.
Don’t write off the top hospitals because you aren’t a millionaire, if you need a hospital.
Majority of Americans live near big cities, and every big city in the United States has a respected academic medical center and some have a lot of them. Overall, those hospitals are in network for Medicare, and all the main carriers and their staff are in network also.
Lastly, assign a friend or family member who will protect your interests. It is not safe to go into hospital without someone representing you.
The more control you take over your healthcare, the less you will worry about any problems related to your care.
