Scientists have discovered a number of drugs which act like brain statins. These drugs are expected to be used as preventives for Alzheimer’s disease. University of Cambridge conducted several experiments on worms and identified drugs which were able to prevent the initial step of brain cell death. Now the task remaining is to match up those drugs with specific stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Drug experts however explained that, it important to ascertain if this drugs can be used in humans safely without producing hazardous effects. Otherwise it will be against morals and ethics.
Neurostatins are not used to treat disease symptoms, they serve to prevent and completely shutter the conditions that usually appear in the first place. Bexarotene is an example of a drug that was discovered to stop the first step leading to brain cell death in worms that were programmed genetically to develop Alzheimer’s disease. Bexarotene is used as a cancer drug. Researchers conducted previous trials to determine if the drug could possibly clear off amyloid plaques from human brains, but the trials turned out to be unsuccessful. This research was conducted at a later stage when the disease had already developed the amyloid plaques.
The head of research at Alzheimer’s UK, DR. Rosa Sancho said, it is of crucial importance for scientists to determine the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of a drug before embarking on clinical trials. They must have a wider knowledge concerning the actions of a drug to human body.
Scientists explained that they need to know if this new approach could stop the first biological events brought about by Alzheimer’s. Research conducted on worms have successfully revealed that bexarotene could help in the initial process to stop amyloid build-up.
Prof Michele Vendruscolo said, the research team was focused on determining the mechanisms of every stage of Alzheimer’s disease development. Our body have their own way of protection against neurodegeneration. With time and as we age, this defense system continuously weakens and can be defeated by degeneration processes. Understanding how this natural defense works is a great breakthrough toward designing drugs that have similar behaviors. They will work together with natural defenses to provide a maximum protection. Scientists have also explained that they are not sure if it will be safe for people with Alzheimer’s disease to use bexarotene. This drug has been used to treat lymphoma. A lot of side effects have been experienced while using this drug. The side effects include; headaches, skin complaints and sickness.
Over the years, scientist have not find any new drug that could effectively handle dementia. They hopefully intend to improvise other drugs that already work for other conditions, to give them a shortcut to improved dementia treatments.
Recently a study suggested that blocking the production new cells of immunity in the brain, could lessen memory problems that are always seen in Alzheimer’s disease.
Researchers at the University of Southampton said the disease is driven by inflammation in the brain. This is an information that is already known but their recent finding added weight on it.
