NEW YORK: According to the researchers it has been discovered that tiny doses of drugs used for cancer are able to stop the ranging uncontrollable immune response to infections that may lead to sepsis.
As it was published in the Journal Science,just a small dose of topoisomerase 1 (or top 1) inhibitor is able to dampen reaction of an acute inflammatory infection while at the same time, it allows the protective of the body defence to occur.
According to the study’s senior investigator, Ivan Marazzi, who is also the assistant professor at Icahn School of medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, the treatment may help in controlling not only sepsis but also new and brutal assaults on human immunity which includes novel influenza strains and pandemics of Ebola and other singular infections, name them but a few.
The sepsis deadly infections are often acquired by the patients with a very weak immune system in the hospital. This is always caused by an excessive response from the host to infection which in turn results into multiple organ failure hence high chances of death.
According to the team, making use of one to three doses of a top 1 inhibitors i.e. one over fifteen of the strength of normal chemotherapy was very enough to rescue 70% to 90% of mice from inflammatory storm death because of either liver failure, acute bacterial infection or may be virus- bacteria co-infection.
