Chandigarh: Included in the magazine Shiksha Bharati, was beef besides veal, among four enhancers which directly impact the absorption of iron in the human body.
The article explains the significance of iron as one of the micro-nutrients required daily by the human body and expands on the effects of iron deficiency, its importance for health, as well as other sources of iron.
Reporters were told by Ram Bilas Sharma, Education Minister, that the article entitled ‘Iron vital for Strength’ was in the magazine which features articles in both English and Hindi and is printed and published by the President of Shiksha Lok Society cum-Director, Secondary Education, from the office of the Director, Secondary Education, Haryana, Panchkula.
He stated that Editor of the magazine confirmed that the article was published because it was based on a scientific report. Mentioned along with veal, lamb and pork was beef as enhancers.
Sharma added that after the removal of the Editor, further action will be taken at a later date as the article should not have been published in the Haryana magazine.
Furthermore, the online edition of the magazine (which has 52 pages) has been taken down from the Primary Education’s official website. But the magazine’s online edition remains available on the Secondary Education Department’s official website.
Manohar Lal Khattar, the Chief Minister who ignited a controversy when he stated that if Muslims wished to remain in India, they should stop eating beef, is the chief patron of the entity that publishes the magazine with Ram Bilas Sharma, Education Minister as the patron.
There is a disclaimer in the beginning of the magazine which states that the opinions mentioned are those of the contributors, and not necessarily those of the department.
