According to the findings of a new research, In cases where transplanted organ may not be a perfect match, Marijuana can be used to delay the rejection of an incompatible organ.
THC, the active ingredient in Marijuana, can be used as an component for anti-rejection therapy as per the findings.
Mitzi Nagarkatti from University of South Carolina School of Medicine in the US said, “We are excited to demonstrate for the first time that Cannabinoid receptors play an important role in the prolongation of rejection of a foreign graft by suppressing immune response in the recipient”.
The study may help doctors to discover a new approach to prevent transplant rejection and other inflammatory diseases, thus opening a new area of research.
“In our experiments we have used two groups of mice which were genetically different and transplanted the skin from one group to other. All the mice received incompatible skin. However, one group of mice were treated with placebo while the other with THC. This made the difference”, Nagarkatti said.
The scientists observed that the rejection process of the organ in the group of mice treated with THC, was slow when compared to the group treated with only Placebo, the IndianExpress reports.
However, the scientists cautioned that Marijuana cannot be used as a supplement to treat organ transplants without the suggestion of a physician. The use of Marijuana without medical advice is banned in countries such as India.
The research was published in Leukocyte Biology.
