Earlier on, we featured a health article in which we talked of the Zika virus. This is a new virus that has caused a lot of panic. The virus broke out in Latin America and many health experts have termed that it may turn out to be more catastrophic than the Ebola. The World Health Organization was even forced to convene a meeting on the 1st of Feb 2016 to determine the seriousness of the disease.
The virus is known to affect mostly the pregnant women. It results into giving birth of deformed children. The sensitivity of the target group has even made it much worse for the vaccine to be developed. It is quite a challenge conducting experiments on the pregnant women.
The virus has spread in greater levels across Americas and Asia has also become alert. India is in the process of testing its 1.3 billion populations to determine if there are any infections.
As at the moment, Asia has been termed to be free from the mosquito spread virus. All the tests that have been conducted at the National Institute of Virology have turned out to be negative. The above mentioned institute is in India and its where spread of viral diseases is closely monitored.
In the year 1952, the institute was put in place. In order for it to determine which diseases to focus on, scientists carried out blood tests across the country. By surprise, Zika virus was among those diseases that were recommended to be focused on. It was among the 15 insect-borne diseases were set apart and given a higher priority.
This virus was first identified in the Ugandan Zika jungle. Back then, it was regarded as a distinct virus.
Researchers have discovered that a bigger number of people in India had been exposed to the virus. During a research, 33 people of the 196 tested were found to be immune. The research is significant in that it was done even before the first official case happened in India.
That thus suggests to us that the virus was already wide spread even before the first case was registered in the human beings.
Back then, Zika was regarded as a mild illness. Its effects were just simple fever and rush and no long-term of any significance was attached to it.
The perception has quickly gone by the wind in the past few months. That has been highly attributed to the fact that the virus is associated with abnormal birth of children.
It is a fact that Zika has always been among us, only that we never bother to routinely test it.
The infamous Aedes aegypti mosquito species is known for spreading the dengue, chikungunya and Zika virus. The chikungunya and dengue is already widely spread in India, which could demonstrate that the Zika virus may occur too. The assumption is based on the fact that the same mosquito is responsible for the three diseases.
Asians however, need not be so worried till they lack sleep.
