The September 11 attacks were a series of our attacks on the USA soil, well coordinated by the Islamic terrorist group, Al-Qaeda. The attacks happened on a Tuesday morning in 2001 September.
The focus of the attacks was to bring down iconic U.S. landmarks and consisted of suicide attacks.
19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked 4 passenger airliners that all left the airports on the United States East Coast. Of the four, two plane, UAF 175 was crashed in the South tower while the AAF 11was crashed in the North tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.
The entire building took a total of 42 minutes for it to collapse. Its destruction caused 10 other nearby buildings to be damaged.
A third plane, AAF 77 was hit into the Pentagon. This is the headquarters for U.S. Department of Defense. The Western side of the building was partially destroyed.
A fourth plane, UAF 93 was initially meant to crash into the Washington, D.C. however, its passengers tried to resist the terrorists and thus making the plane to crash into field in Pennsylvania.
A total of two thousand, nine hundred and ninety six people died due to the attacks. This is inclusive of the 19 hijackers. Property worth $10 billion was destroyed while the total costs incurred were $3 trillion.
The firefighters and the law enforcers had equally had their deadliest time. 72 law enforcement officers were killed while 343 firefighters died as they tried to take control of the situation.
The Al-Qaeda was immediately suspected for the 9/11 Attacks. The United States responded to them by invading the terrorist group hideouts. They invaded Afghanistan in which they deposed the Taliban that housed the Al-Qaeda.
Osama bin Laden earlier on declined any involvement. However, in the year 2004, he claimed to be responsible for the attacks. He stated that several reasons for the attacks. They included: America supporting Israel, the sanctions imposed on Iraq and U.S. troops being present in Saudi Arabia.
The economy of Lower Manhattan was adversely affected by the attacks which in turn had a bigger impact on the global markets. Wall Street was closed until 17th September. Many other closings, cancellations and evacuations proceeded due to either fear of another attack or respect.
The WTC site was fully cleaned and cleared by May 2002. Repair of the Pentagon happened within one year.
The construction of One WTC started in 2006 and ended in 2014. There are many memorials that have been constructed for remembrance.
