With the consent of the United Kingdom as it is in Quebec Agreement, the United States of America dropped weapons on two Japan cities, Nagasaki and Hiroshima. This was at the final stage of the Second World War in 1945. In history, the two attacks remained the only use of nuclear weapons in warfare worldwide. About 129,000 people were killed in the bombings.
The allies were ready for what was termed to be costly invasion of Japan’s mainland in the final year of the war. This was followed by a U.S firebombing campaign obliterating most of the Japanese cities. On May, 8th, 1954, Nazi Germany signed its instrument of surrender and this made the conclusion with the war in Europe. The Japanese did not accept the allies’ demand to surrender unconditionally and this made the Pacific war continued.
On July, 26th, 1945, United Kingdom, United States with China in conclusion, in Potsdam Declaration asked the Japanese armed forces to unconditionally surrender but they ignored it.
An atomic bomb was dented successfully by the allied Manhattan Project in the desert of New Mexico in July, 1945 and basing on two alternate designs, atomic weapons had been produced by August. The U.S Army Air Forces, known as The 509th Composite equipped itself with a version of Silverplate Boeing B-29 super fortresses that had ability to deliver them from Tinian, Mariana Island.
A Uranium gun –type atomic bomb was dropped in Hiroshima by the U.S in on August, 6th. 16 hrs later, Harry S. Turman called for the Japan’s surrender with a warning to expect a rain of ruin from the air. Three days after this, Plutonium implosion bomb-type was by the U.S o people in Nagasaki City. About 90,000-146,000 people in Hiroshima and between 39,000-80,000 in Nagasaki were killed by the acute effects of the bombing within the first two to four months. Half of the deaths in each city were on the first day. Large population died from radiation sickness in the following months while others died of injuries, compounded by malnutrition and illness. Most of the dead in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were civilians. However, there was a sizable military garrison in Hiroshima.
Nagasaki and the Soviet Union’s declaration of the war from Japan made it public that it had surrendered to the Allies 6 days from the time of bombing. This was on 115th, August. It signed the instrument of surrender and this effectively ended World War II on September 2nd. The bombing made the Japans to surrender. The ethical justification of these attacks is still debated.
