Prince William and Kate visited Taj Mahal as they finalized their tour of India and Bhutan.
24 years ago, Diana, Princess of Wales, was captured alone in front of the monument to love in 1992. That happened shortly before her marriage with the Prince of Wales broke up.
Officials of the royals said that the duke and duchess hope that they will forge new memories.
The couple visited Taj Mahal on their way from Bhutan to India.
Tourists were cleared from Taj Mahal shortly before the Cambridge couple arrived. They were welcomed by on lookers who had lined up to meet them.
As temperatures continued to rise, ice water was sprinkled by workers on the famous “Diana bench” in front of the monument where the two posed for a photo. Kate wore a white-and-blue dress and William was in a matching blue blazer.
“It’s a beautiful place, stunning designs in there,” Prince William told reporters after they spent about half an hour inside the mausoleum, famous for its pure white marble.
They said that they were pleased to have learnt about the romance of the building.
Among the people that waited for the royal couple was a 73-year-ol fan that has memories that dates as back the time Queen Elizabeth II visited in 1961.
“I have been dreaming of meeting the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge ever since I got to know they would be coming to the Taj,” Surendra Sharma told AFP.
This visit finalizes their visit to a country that was under the leadership of the British for about 200 years.
