PULGAON: A fire at a massive military ammunition depot in Pulgaon has killed two army officials, a soldier and 13 civilian fire fighters. 17 others were injured and are reported to be stable, undergoing treatment in a nearby hospital.
The fire-blaze began at about 1.30 am at a storage center in the military ammunition depot – the country’s largest and the second largest in Asia. Live witnesses said that the flames were very strong and they could feel the heat till a radius of 1 kilometer from the ammunition depot.
As per the sources, ammunition stored here includes AK-47’s and Brahmos missiles. It has been reported that more causalities occurred as the officers rushed towards the fire to save crucial ammunition from being blown up.
Union Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar had ordered a probe into the incident and added that the fire is not an attack from the outsiders. The army has been working around over figuring out the cause behind the massive explosion.
One of the officers who died has been identified as Major K Manoj Kumar, from Kerala.
Villages surrounding the depot were evacuated and 10 fire-engines worked through the night to contain the fire. “The fire has been brought under control at 06.15 AM in the morning. As of now, the situation is under control and we are preparing a report”, an officer from the Nagpur Fire department said.
