Speaking at Lawyers Meet-2015, held in Chennai, the Bar Council Chairman of India Mr.Manan Kumar Mishra, had made a shocking revelation that 30% of all lawyers in India are fake lawyers having fraudulent degrees. Mishra said in his speech that the Bar Council was in the process of weeding out the fake lawyers from the Country.
Mr.Mishra alleged that about 20% of the lawyers, currently practicing in the courts does not have a valid law degree. He cited that even the former Delhi Law Minister Mr.Tomar himself had a fake law degree. “Fake Lawyers and non-practicing Lawyers are deteriorating the quality of the profession. We, at the Bar Council will soon filter such fake and non-practicing lawyers and remove them from the rolls”, Mishra said.
He also alleged that the fake and non-practicing Lawyers are the ones who are carrying out strikes in the courts for petty reasons. The Bar Council Chairman, who was elected for the second time as chairman, expressed displeasure over thousands of fake law degree certificates being issued throughout India and the fake Lawyers without proper degrees being practicing in the courts and tribunals.
“We have decided to carry out the first ever certificate verification exercise by the BCI. All the enrolled members credentials as submitted by the Lawyers will be verified and the fake ones will be removed soon. Every State will carry out the process except Karnataka and Kerala, where the High Court has issued an interim stay”, the Chairman said, the Times of India reports.
The Bar Council of India Chairman also said that the next target of the Council was to establish National Law Colleges in different States of India. “These colleges will be better than all the 1000-odd Law colleges in this country” he said.
The Bar Council of India will soon constitute a bench with retired judges to verify and weed-out the fraudulent fake lawyers from the rolls of the BCI.
