Ludhiana: Early in the morning, today, Ammonia gas leak from a gas tanker on the Ludhiana-Delhi highway of Punjab has killed five and hundred others were hospitalized. People got affected on inhaling the hazardous gas fumes from the tanker.
The Tanker was punctured, when it was struck under a flyover, along a canal on the Doraha Bypass road. Due to the inhalation of the harmful fumes from the tanker, five persons have been reported to be dead, while 100 others have been hospitalized with breathing problems.
Ludhiana Police Commissioner said, ” We have admitted all those who have suffered breathing problems to various hospitals of Ludhiana. Baring 2-3 members of all the hospitalized people, the rest of them were declared by the doctors as out of danger”.
The Doraha police said that the residents of the local area have come out of their houses when the gas from the tanker was fuming out, spreading to other places. The police added that the surrounding areas had to evacuated after the incident.
The police preliminary reports state that all the deceased were male adults. Two of them were identified as Satpal of Doraha and Avtej Singh of Jalandhar. The dead bodies of the deceased were shifted to a hospital in Ludhiana, The Times of India reports.
Mr.Singh, a police official said, ” The incident has happened totally due to the negligence of the driver. The driver has damaged the valve of the tanker when he was crossing the flyover. It was late in the night, when there was not much traffic. The driver should have assessed to himself, whether his vehicle could pass under the flyover.”
