Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister, Mr Thawar Chand Gehlot said on Monday that the Central Government was planning to introduce a special identity system for the disabled individuals across the country.
The Minister said that the special identity cards issued under this reform, will enable the individuals to claim the benefits of various Central and State Government’s welfare schemes.
“We are aware of the problems faced by the physically challenged individuals to claim rightful benefits from the Government. They were required to produce various documents in order to get the benefits of the welfare schemes. The main purpose of this identity card was to decrease the burden on the challenged individuals”, Gehlot said.
The Minister had also announced a package of Rs.19 crore to complete the identification project and congratulated the Kerala Government for storing an authentic data of the differently-abled citizens in its jurisdiction.
“We will soon start a new scheme to empower the differently-abled citizens of India. A new initiative named Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan will be launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 3rd”, Gehlot said.
The Minister also added that the initiative taken up by the Government will aim for an all-round development of physically challenged persons.
