NEW DELHI: The Successor of the ‘Missionaries of Charity’ after Mother Teresa’s death in 1997, Sister Nirmala has today passed away at the age of 81, due to an ill health. The city of Kolkata was saddened by the demise of the charity Head. Sister Nirmala was regarded for her unbound service to the poor and underprivileged.
An official from the Missionaries of Charity said that Sister Nirmala was suffering from ill-health since a week and that her health was deteriorating day by day.
Sister Nirmala’s body would be brought to the Mother House tomorrow and people would be allowed to pay respects to the Sister. ” People can pay their last respects to Sister Nirmala tomorrow at the Mother House. Her funeral will be held at 4 PM tomorrow.”, the Missionaries of Charity official said.
Sister Nirmala was selected as the Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity on March 13th, 1997, six months before the death of Mother Teresa. Sister Mary Prema was elected as the next Superior General in a general chapter held in Calcutta in April, 2009.
West Bengal Chief Minister Ms.Mamatha Bannerjee expressed her condolences over the demise of Sister Nirmala, on the micro-blogging site Twitter. She tweeted that Kolkata and the world would miss Sister Nirmala’s services to the Humanity, the Times of India reports.
