The number of people dead in Haiti due to Hurricane Matthew has shot up to over 300 – officials say.
It is reported that about 50 people died in the town of Roche-a-Bateau alone.
More than 30,000 homes were destroyed in Sud province while in the nearby town of Jeremie, 80 percent of its buildings were reduced to just bricks.
The hurricane has now advanced to the level of Category three storm and is moving towards the coastline of Florida.
Governor Rick Scott provided a strong warning, saying that people should keep off the Cape Canaveral as well as Port Canaveral.
According to the information provided by Senator Herve Fourcand of Southern Haiti to AFP news agency, more than 300 people have died due to Hurricane Matthew.
A different official was quoted by Reuters that 339 people are dead.
Hurricane Matthew has pounded the Bahamas after slicing through Haiti and Cuba.
The powerful storm has destroyed trees and power lines in the Bahamas.
Most of the deaths in Haiti were in towns and fishing villages around the southern coast, with many killed by falling trees, flying debris and swollen rivers.
The storm went through Tiburon peninsula, flattening homes as it pushed the sea onto the mainland. The wind speed was recorded to be about 230km/h.
A major bridge collapsed on Tuesday cutting-off south-west.
Effects
Among the most immediate impacts of Hurricane Matthew was lose of power and phone coverage. Food and water is also running out as people lay hopeless.
A resident in Les Cayes – Jean Joseph – spoke to BBC where he said that “What’s going on right now is a lot of people are walking around.” He continued saying that “They have no home. A lot of them – they’re just walking around. I don’t know what they’re going to do.”
