Swedish Newspaper “Dagens Nyheter”‘s editor-in-chief Peter Wolodarski has recently interviewed the President of India, in Rashtrapathi Bhavan, the official residence of the President. The newspaper on 25th May of this month, published an article based on the interview, which has irked the Government of India.
According to the reports, as claimed by the Swedish daily, President Mr. Mukherjee, has said in an interview that Bofors issues cannot be called a scandal as the courts in India, has not yet provided its verdict on the same. It seems that the New Delhi was not happy with the President’s remarks being published.
Following the controversy, the Ambassador for Sweden, Banashri Bose Harrison has written an official letter to the Daily. In the letter, as claimed by the Dagens Nyheter , the Ambassador has asked the editor to remove the President’s comments from the article. The letters seems to express the New Delhi’s disappointment over the controversial statements.
Ms. Bose in her letter to the newspaper said that it is not good at the part of the News paper to include, the off the record comments that the President has spoken during the interview. she also questioned the newspaper over the presentation of the interview. Ms. Bose wrote, ” The presentation of the interview is unprofessional and unethical on your part. The video uploaded by your newspaper shows, that the Bofors is the first question. However, in the interview it is laid as the third question. This type of Journalism is totally a misleading”.
Ms. Bose also went on to say that it may effect the President’s tour of the nation in the coming week, The Hindu reports.
New Delhi has shown disappointment, over the respect shown to the President. On the other hand, Minister of defense, Manohar parrikar did not opt to speak on the issue. He instead said ” I do not know about the issue. But if you ask me, the quality of the Bofors is good.”
The News paper editor said that they are not going to accept the request of the Ambassador to remove sections of the interview. It reiterated that a journalist does not publish what others like, but only the fact.
President Pranab Mukherjee is to tour Sweden next week on the invitation of the Sweden King.
