KANPUR: Fourteen coaches of the Indore-Patna Express has derailed near Pukhrayan, 100 Kms from Kanpur railways station, killing 96 people and injuring more than 100. The accident has reportedly taken place at 3 am in the morning and the cause of the derailment is yet to be known.
The passengers were asleep when the accident took place. Railway officials said that the death toll may rise with the rescue teams pulling out the bodies underneath the metal plates of the train. Officials suspect that a rail fracture could be the cause of the derailment given the timing at which the accident occurred.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and has ordered the NDRF teams to rush to the spot immediately. Rescue operations are still under way with more than 30 ambulances shifting the injured to the nearby hospital in Malasa. The Prime Minister has also announced Rs 2 Lakh ex-gratia for each of the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the seriously injured passengers.
Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu also announced Rs 3.5 Lakh ex-gratia to the families of the deceased while adding that the government will take care of medical expenses of the injured passengers.
Uttar Pradesh Cheif Minister Akhilesh Yadav has instructed the principal secretary of state’s Health Ministry Arun Kumar, to ensure no shortage of blood and medicines for the treatment of the injured in Malasa.
The Railway Minister has ordered a probe into the accident and assured severe action on all those found guilty.
