By now you probably already know about the Islamic State rise in Afghanistan. This militant group is trying to create the impression that it is constructing a province which it will refer to as the Caliphate and will be found east of Afghanistan. However, they have made serious tactical errors.
The IS group is stronger in a region called Kunar. Most of the youths here have ended up being jihadi fighters while others have ended up becoming members of IS militant.
Joining the jihadi in the area is not seen as being something out of this world. Actually, others view it as though it is a career. Employment opportunities are scarce and thus the young people try to get themselves anything to earn a living.
It is not a big surprise for the Afghan that Kunar became the first place for the IS to establish its basement. Controlling the region over time has always brought up quite some difficulties.
Very many tribal groups are found here and they all tend to pay very little attention to the Kabul-based government. They do not care about any person that is in charge. Be it the Taliban or the Americans.
IS militant or popularly known in Kunar as Da’esh became more notable in the year 2014. This is quite a different group compared to the rest. Right from the beginning, IS had sufficient resources, and its organization was far much better than any other Taliban group that has ever been.
Their popularity increased due to the fact that they did not ask people to forcefully give them money. The group became famous among the locals until a time when they deviated and started experiencing some tactical errors.
The very first thing is that the Commanders were unable to control their very own men. July last year, a conflict broke up a local Taliban and a top leader. What proceeded is that commander made attacks against the government forces neighboring them.
The IS in the process has had quite a number of disasters. They have become unable to establish themselves in the region. Instead, they are getting attacks from all sides.
The US main intention is to bring the Da’esh to its knees in Afghanistan. The last couple of weeks have seen the group being attacked by air strikes.
The Afghan government and the Taliban are also after them. The local militia is equally not for them. In short, the tables have turned around and everyone is against them.
Some members that had earlier on joined IS are now trying to maintain a low profile. Many of them used to be Taliban fighters but of course it is now hard for them to go back.
This is a good thing but does not mean the last of Islamic state has been seen in the Kunar region. The ideology fighters are still present and getting rid of them will prove to be a challenge.
