NEW DELHI: Describing the demonetization move as unwanted and more painful than the emergency time, West Bengal Cheif Minister Mamata Banerjee and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal have on Thursday slammed the government for making the common man suffer. The two chief ministers have earlier met the Reserve Bank of India officials before addressing the wholesale traders at a market in Delhi.
Briefing the media after meeting the Reserve Bank of India officials, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “I have just now met the higher officials of the RBI. They do not have any clear details on the demonetization and the steps to ease pressure over the general public. The situation now, if you look at the public standing in queues and those who have lost their lives in the process, it is painful. This is even worse than the emergency time”.
“How can the Reserve Bank of India dare to not have any answers over demonetization. Who is the real authority behind this decision?. The Prime Minister in his address to the nation said that he has the backing of the RBI and that this is a well-planned move. Mr.Prime Minister if this is a well-planned move, don’t you know that recalibrating ATMs will take time?. Aren’t you aware of the fact that pumping Rs 2000 notes into the market will require lower denomination notes?. Where are the lower denomination notes?. I do not understand the rationale behind introducing Rs 2000 notes into the market, much before the Rs 500 notes. And again I cannot understand the logic behind banning Rs 1000 note and replacing it by Rs 2000 note. The government should answer this”,she added.
Ms.Banerjee demanded that the government must roll back the demonetization move within three days, failing which the TMC supremo pledged that there will be a widespread protest from the opposition parties in India to save the country.
Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal too voiced similar concerns. “This move is only aimed at helping those Modiji’s friends, who have Rs 8 lakh crore loans. By collecting Rs 10 lakh crore from the common people, you intend to waive off their loans. The Prime Minister must answer my questions on his sincerity during the tenure as the Gujarat Cheif Minister. I have all the documents to claim my allegations, everything will be made public very soon”.
“You people have targeted only the common man. Why did the BJP government did not conduct any IT raids on former BJP minister G Janardhana Reddy who spent Rs 500 crore on his daughter’s wedding?. Why no income tax raids on those rich candidates who are boosting themselves as the richest kids of India?. Why you didn’t go there first?”, Mr.Kejriwal questioned.
The demonetization heat is also felt in the parliament, with the opposition parties demanding for a debate with an explanation from the Prime Minister.
