Former President of India, also widely known as the “Missile man of India”, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam died on Monday after he suddenly collapsed during his speech at the IIM in Shilliong.
Kalam, was declared dead by the Bethany hospital two hours after he was taken into the ICU following the collapse at around 6.30PM at IIM Shillong.
Dr. Abdul Kalam, well known as the ‘People’s president’ who took over the office of the President of India from 2002 to 2007 has worked for the development of the rocket science in India. He dreamed to see India as a developed nation. His service to ISRO was a remarkable one, which laid foundations to the development of ISRO into a successful research centre. He is called as the ‘Missile Man of India’ for the service he has rendered in the field of defense.
V Shanmughanathan, the Governor of Meghalaya, who rushed to the hospital on knowing the news of the former president’s admission into the hospital, said that he was no more and died at 07.45 PM. Despite of the best efforts from the medical team, he could not be revived.
Chief Secretary PBO Warjiri told the reports outside the hospital that he has requested the Union Secretary Mr.Goyal to make arrangements for carrying the body of Dr Kalam from Guwahati to Delhi on Tuesday Morning.
Though a team of doctors from the army hospital and the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) rushed to the hospital, their efforts proved to be of no use.
Union Secretary Mr.Goyal said that a seven days mourning will be declared by the Centre and the parliament is likely to be adjourned as a respect to his memories.
An Aeronautics engineer from Madras Institute of Technology, Kalam was considered the brain of missile programme in India got and as Chief Scientific Adviser to Vajpayee was also instrumental in the Pokhran nuclear test in 1998, the firstpost reports.
As President, Kalam utilised any opportunity that came to him to address students, especially school children, to dream big so that they became achievers in life. A bachelor, the former President was a veena player and was deeply interested in Carnatic music. He was vegetarian all his life.
Earlier during the day, Kalam had tweeted about his function at IIM Shillong.
President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Modi and other politicians expressed their deep condolences over the sudden demise of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
