MUMBAI: Amid wide spread criticism from celebrities and the public over a Snapchat video posted online by self-professed comedian Tanmay Bhat, the Mumbai police has contacted Google to block the video from Youtube and Google’s search results with immediate effect. The decision from the Mumbai police comes in the wake of a series of complaints against the video, alleged to be offensive.
The video features, comedian Tanmay Bhat changing roles as both Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar to create some fun – which eventually misfired creating a wide spread anguish both from the celebrities and the general public. In the snapchat video, Tanmay Bhat depicted Sachin and Lata as fighting against each other which gradually turned to as ‘hurling insults at each other’. In the video ‘Lata says that she likes Virat Kohli more than Sachin and that he was better than Sachin’. To this, Sachin counters ‘Lata is extremely old.’ (As per the original video posted by Tanmay Bhat)
Netizens started expressing their anguish against the comedian for creating a meaningless video, actually defaming two prominent personalities of the Indian sub-continent and also the awardees of Bharat Ratna – the country’s highest Civilian award.
Following the incident, Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and the BJP have filed complaints with the police demanding an action against the comedian. The Mumbai cops have asked for a legal opinion on whether an FIR can be registered in the case. Meanwhile, it has requested Google to take down the video from all its platforms.
Members from the Shivsena too have urged the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take action against Tanmay for insulting the legends of Maharashtra. Celebrities like Anupam Kher and Riteish Deshmukh too have expressed their dissatisfaction over the issue.
On the other hand, comedian Tanmay Bhat looked unfazed. He tweeted “A snapstory is going to be on the news tonight. Congrats everyone”.
