LOS ANGELES: It has been a sad day for the animal lovers as Nola, one of the four remaining northern white rhinos on Earth, died on Sunday. The northern white rhinoceros which was kept at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Los Angeles, has been suffering from a bacterial infection and age-related health issues for quite a long time.
According to a statement released by the Zoo officials, Nola, a 41-year old white northern rhino has suffered from a bacterial infection in the pelvic region. Veterinarians carried out surgical procedures and removed the large pelvic abscess, identified as the source of infection.
However, the health condition of the animal worsened since then. Zoo officials said that the animal was constantly monitored by the veterinary doctors over the last two weeks. “Our Veterinary team constantly monitored the progress of Nola’s health. Sadly, the appetite and activity levels of the rhino declined gradually. The animal was not able to respond to any medical treatment”, the statement from the Zoo said.
“Nola, has been an iconic animal. The northern white rhino had world-wide fans. Throughout these years millions of people have learned about the plight of these rhinos in the wild and especially about Nola, through social posts and media. The gentle nature of the animal made it one of the most loved animals by the Zoo staff. The Zoo staff and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park will miss Nola a lot”, the Zoo said.
Northern white rhinos are considered as one of the endangered species in the Wild. Currently, only three northern white rhinos are left in the world with one of them passing away in Los Angeles. The remaining three are in Kenya.
Nola was captured at the age of 2, in the Sudan forests and was brought to San Diego Zoo Safari Park for breeding its race.
Scientists are still unsure about the division of northern and southern white rhinos. Most of them believe southern white rhinos as a subclass of northern white rhinos as they closely resembles each other. As of now the northern white rhinos are on the verge of becoming extinct as only three such rhinos are remaining on Earth due to the ill effects of poaching.
