NEW DELHI: The Delhi government said in a statement that senior and noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani will defend Delhi’s Chief Minister Mr Arvind Kejriwal against a defamation suit filed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the Delhi High court.
” Jethmalani will appear for the Arvind and other AAP MLAs in the Delhi High court”, a source close to the government said.
The best part of it is that the noted lawyer had decided to defend the Delhi Chief Minister without any fee, a move which had surprised politicians in the country.
Earlier, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley filed a defamation suit in the Delhi High court against Kejriwal and sought Rs 10 crore in damage for accusing him of corruption, during his term as the President of DDCA (Delhi & Districts Cricket Administration).
The political war between Arvind Kejriwal and Arun Jaitley has started with the CBI riding Arvind Kejriwal principal secretary’s office (a part of CM’s office), citing allegations against the principal secretary in a case as reason.
However, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took on the Central government ‘saying that the Finance Minister had used the CBI to dislocate files relating to the DDCA scam which he was part of’. Things have changed drastically following Kejriwal’s statement, which ultimately led to the filing of a defamation suit by the Finance Minister.
The next hearing of the defamation suit has been scheduled for January 5th, 2016.
