A Somalia mosque under refurbishment has collapsed, leading to the death of 15, while 40 others injured.
At least 15 people lost their lives and scores others injured on Friday in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu after a mosque that was filled with worshippers came down rumbling in wreckages. Sources say that the killer mosque was under refurbishment.
Latest reports have it that the mosque was hosting hundreds of people before the hour of the tragedy. Reports have it that there are very high possibilities of many other being held up or trapped under the rubble.
The local media in the capital Mogadishu has reported that an engineer who in charge of the refurbishing project has been arrested. It is alleged that the engineer portrayed a lot of negligence that might have led to collapse of the mosque.
A number of local media in Somalia report that more than 100 people involved in the construction were pouring a concrete foundation and this was after the prayer session when the building came down. However, other media outlets report that the mosque came down rumbling during prayers hours when worshippers were in the building.
Most of the people who have been confirmed dead from the accident are said to be construction workers, this is according to a privately –owned radio station called Radio Shebelle.
Nonetheless, according to the Somali National News Agency, the incident took place in the district of Dayniile. Somali National News Agency is a state owned.
Over the past couple of days, there have reports of very heavy rains falling in the area.
Mogadishu among other cities in Somalia are controlled by the government of Somalia, however, the militia groups like the widely known al-Qaeda and the al-Shabaab are said to be dominating and also controlling many places located in the rural settlement areas.
The government of Somalia is currently being protected by more than 22,000 African Union Soldiers and police who have been deployed in the country to reinforce tranquility.
