Militants attacked six army convoys which were coming from Motul to Imphal, in Manipur killing at least 20 and injuring 12 people. The incident took place in Manipur’s Chandel district in the early morning hours.
The injured soldiers were airlifted from the attacked area to Nagaland and are currently undergoing treatment. A spokesperson from the Indian Army said that the militants fired rocket-propelled grenades at the Army personnel. The dead bodies were brutally damaged with the rapid firing from the militants.
The attack was termed as the worst attack on army in this decade. Intelligence agencies feel that the attack was a vengeance for a reported killing of a women by the army personnel.
The army forces are given special powers through the ASFP. Despite the special powers, the army has been finding it difficult to control the locales of the disturbed areas.
The Central government has 0rdered into an investigation into the issue.
