The much expected Samsung Galaxy S8 will be one of the biggest smartphones released in 2017. Probably it will also be the most controversial but that’s not yet verified until it is released into the market. Well, we may just have gotten the release date, judging by the most recent leak…
Trusted information provided by the ever vigilant SamMobile suggests that Samsung may fore-go its conventional launching at Mobile World Congress in February. Instead, the leak makes a point that Samsung may organize a separate event in New York in March to unveil the Galaxy S8. Customers would then have to wait till 18th April for the first sales.
A shift from the S7 release Date
The Galaxy S7 was released on 11th March 2016 and thus if these rumors are anything to go by, then the delay would be a significant one. However, the same delay will be in-line to the conventional release date for the S-series. Remember the Galaxy S6; S5 and S4 were all first sold on 10th, 11th and 27th April respectively. Before that, the S3, S2 and S1 had been launched during the May/June period.
The said date is supported by the fact that Samsung is likely to begin mass production of Galaxy S8 in March.
Surprising Design Choice
For a long time the expectation has been that Samsung would switch to a single model of the Galaxy S8, and this model would echo the S6 Edge and S7 Edge with the two long edges curving into the edge of the device. The curved screen is seen as Samsung’s ‘key physical attribute’ by many and helps the Galaxy devices stand out in the crowded retail market.
The most recent rumors suggest that Samsung will stay with two models of Galaxy handsets, with the presumptively named S8 Edge, and a vanilla flat-screened Galaxy S8.
Even though Samsung’s intentions have always been to go beyond our imagination of a smartphone, the curved screen of the S6 Edge and S7 Edge leaned too far towards fashion and away from practicality.
These screens do not come with TouchWiz UI and there are times when the information along the edge tends to be distorted. Imagine yourself watching a video while the top and the bottom have curved away. The vanilla flat screened would work better here.

Clean up the damage caused by the Note 7
It is no secret that Samsung’s reputation of a top-of-the-world manufacturer was damaged by the exploding Note 7. The main role of the S8 would then be to clean up the dents caused by the already cancelled smartphones.
The S8 is expected to do exactly that.
Samsung’s Edgy S8 would be more costly compared to the vanilla flat screen. That way, Samsung will have a voice both in the premium and enterprise market. For that matter, it is corporate-wise for Samsung to launch two models for the S8 family.
This is a defining moment for Samsung. The South Korea Company has to use the S8 to make a statement to its major competitor, Apple, after the Note fiasco. It needs to retain a foothold in the enterprise market.
After the Galaxy S8 release date is a history, there are high chances the Galaxy S8 and S8 Edge will attract more customers.
