KOLKATA: Nearly a year after experimenting with an android app to catch the criminals among the police circles in Kolkata, the Police department has finally released the Crime Criminal search mobile application for public. The app will facilitate the track down of criminals in real-time with the aid of public via technology. A dedicated application and a website for the same was launched by DGP Surajit Kar Purkayastha on Friday, through which the common public can gain knowledge about crime and criminals in the state and also help the police to catch them.
The App has been made available on Google play for download. As of now, about 1,663 officers with a centralized database of 2,01,682 criminals and 2,44,538 crimes have been using this app.
“This will be a very helpful tool for both police and the citizens to catch the wrongdoers. The app will facilitate increased interaction with the public, along with integrated police investigations”, DGP Purkayastha said.
The app will share details and clues collected by the Police in various crime investigations and may ask the public for specific help. For example, the CID may share a CCTV footage over the app for identifying the person in the footage. Similarly, they can also share the name and address of an accused and ask for their photograph.
In addition, there will be an interactive map detailing all the police stations in West Bengal with the name and phone number of the officer in charge of each station. For the first time, the Kolkata police have released a heat map which will indicate the crime-prone in areas in the city. The heat map can be used by the citizens to avoid a particular unsafe route during a night travel.
For the police, the app is expected to reduce significant workload off them by furnishing all the details about an accused and the crime within the reach of fingertips.
