It was costly for the British to loose in the French and Indian war. When the war came to an end in 1773, King George III resorted to taxing the American colonies as way to generate revenue for the empire. They wanted to reestablish and maintain control of their colonies. The crown came up with a number of outrageous taxes but went wrong when it attempted to tax tea. That action led to the emergence of the American Revolution.
The colonies refuted the demands for them to pay taxes as per the Townsend Acts saying that it was not their obligation to respect an act that had been passed by a parliament in which they were not represented. Parliament then responded by retracting the tax but maintained the tea duty. This demonstrated that parliament had the ability and right to tax the colonies.
In May 1773, Parliament came up with a tricky plan in which the stumbling East India Company was given monopoly to import tea to America. This would allow the Americans to get cheaper tea. The colonies would prefer to pay tax than deny themselves the pleasure of enjoying tea since it was staple by then. However, paying the taxes would be acknowledging that parliament had the right to impose the taxes.
The colonies thus did not fall into the trap of Parliament. When the East India Company imported the tea, it was taken to warehouses in New York and Philadelphia where it remained unconsumed until 3 years later when patriots sold it to finance the revolution.
When the 3 tea ships arrived in Boston, there was a furious reaction. The crisis hit a climax on Dec 16th 1773 when more than 7000 agitated locals held a mass meeting at Old South Meeting House and paid no duty.
Many colonialists applauded the action but London reacted swiftly. Parliament passed the Intolerance Act that among other actions; closed Port of Boston. This was the beginning of the American Revolution.
Did you think that the list could have been topped by something better? Who cares about what happens in a tea party anyway? But that is not so, especially not when people boycott the coffee and label it as the English drink which eventually culminates into the American Revolutionary War.
The 1773 Boston Tea Party had its own effect. America became the first nation to oppose the tyranny of her majesty. This wasn’t just a war between England and America but also among major European Nations. The congress declared independence on July 1776, resulting into major changes in the world. 13 colonies in the world were set free, French Revolution began followed by Russia and war in other major colonies started shortly. The economy of Great Britain also crashed since it relied on exploiting these colonies’ resources.
