The company reported that 250 million videos and 42 billion messages were shared via WhatsApp each day.

Forbes estimates that more than half of WhatsApp subscribers started using it within the past 21 months.

In India, the app is very popular. However, the competition is stiff in Asia since there are other well established messaging applications such as Viber and WeChat.
In other countries, the app became controversial. Cases of security concerns have been raised. For instance, Brazil tried to ban the app in 2015 but was unable to.
On the 6th of February 2015, a judge in Brazil made a ruling that the app should be banned due to moral issues. The occurrence happened after morally questionable photos of children were circulated among some users.
The ruling was made with the intention of compelling the company to help the authorities in their investigation. The ban however could not stop the ever growing app from expanding since it now has 1 billion subscribers.
WhatsApp is now owned by Facebook, having been bought at a cost of $19 billion.
