British caretaker Prime Minister, David Cameron is set to resign on Wednesday, paving the way for Theresa May to take over premiership.
Mrs. May became the immediate Conservative Party leader after her only contender, Andrea Leadsom quit the race. She is expected to replace David Cameron on Wednesday evening.
Speaking just after her new position was affirmed by the chair of the 1922 Committee, May said that she would oversee smooth Britain withdrawal from the UK. She also said that her other priorities will include uniting the country as they move to a brighter future.
Cameron had already announced that he would step down if Brexit won the EU referendum. The Leave Vote has sent shockwaves in Britain’s political establishment. The financial markets were not spared either.
David Cameron said that the new changes will make him adjust about plans to be in charge till 9th of September. Had May stayed in the race, the two contesters would have competed for votes over summer and the winner announced on the said date.
The Prime Minister told reporters that “Obviously, with these changes, we now don’t need to have a prolonged period of transition. And so tomorrow I will chair my last Cabinet meeting. On Wednesday I will attend the House of Commons for Prime Minister’s questions.”
He is then expected to notify the queen about his resignation.
“So we will have a new prime minister in that building behind me by Wednesday evening.”
Mr. Cameron supported Leadsom in her decision to quit the race, adding that May would move the country in the right direction. He has called for full support for her.
Is UK democracy threatened?
May is the only one left in a job that no one else was ready to take. This is a culmination of the new political changes in Britain after Brexit.
May supported the country to leave in EU but she will steer it in the pro-Brexit era. She has however been categorical that she will make the best out of Brexit.
“Brexit means Brexit, and we’re going to make a success of it. There will be no attempts to remain inside the EU. No attempts to rejoin it by the back door. No second referendum. The country voted to leave the European Union, and as prime minister, I will make sure we leave the European Union,” she said.
