Delhi Cheif Minister Arvind Kejriwal conducted a public cabinet meeting with his ministers, in a park in the heart of the National Capital Region today. The cabinet discussed various problems with the statehood for Delhi as the top priority in the current issues.
Delhi being a National Capital Region, constitutionally it is not provided with the powers of a state like the others states of India. Certain executive powers like the appointment of security officers, the police etc are vested in the hands of the Union cabinet, which makes decisions in the name of the president.
Kejrival, recently faced a war of governance with the L.Governor of Delhi. Both have appointed crucial officers, claming each others powers unconstitutional to the execution of the appointments. The L.Governor cancelled all the appointments by the CM, terming them as “void”. This irked the chief minister who went on to debate the issue with the president.
In the latest scenario, the government of India has issued a notification saying that the L.Governor has the rights to appoint the Officials of the state. In a major turn around, Kejriwal summoned for a emergency two day Assembly meeting to reject the notification by a majority vote. This would bring the president into action, as per the constitution, the NDTV reports.
Due to the current ongoings, Kejriwal declared that he would gain a statehood to Delhi well in time before his term expires.
