KASHMIR: Ahead of the separatist groups meeting to discuss the issue of Sainik colonies, separatist leaders Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and SAS Geelani have been put under house arrest by the state police.
Another separatist leader, Mohammad Yasin Malik, the founder of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) has also been put under house arrest. The JKLF leader was recently out on bail, after being arrested in Srinagar last week.
According to the sources, the two biggest separatist groups of Kashmir, Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) and Hurriyat Conference have united for the purpose of fighting against the issue of Sainik colonies. The unity between the two comes after a long period of eight years.
The issue of Sainik Colonies, which aims to provide residential complex for former servicemen, has received raging protests with divided opinions in the state. Earlier, there was a heated argument between the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and the opposition leader Omar Abdullah in the State assembly over the same issue.
The house arrest of the separatist leaders at this point can be understood as a move by the State Police to control raging violent protests across the state.
