The UN envoy to Syria has requested Russia and the US to intervene urgently at the “highest level” in talks to end the Syria conflict.
Staffan de Mistura spoke after he had briefed the UN Security Council about the progress of the peace talks in which he said that the February truce agreement was barely active.
Recent days have seen an escalation of violence in Syria.
In the government strikes that were done on a residential building and a nearby hospital on Wednesday, at least 20 civilians were reported dead.
The White Helmets, Civil defense volunteers, said that children were also killed in the air strike.
Mr. de Mistura called upon the US and Russia to work together since President Putin and President Barack are directly linked to the success of Syria peace process.
Mr de Mistura said that the fragile “cessation of hostilities” established in February had been “saved from total collapse” but “could collapse any time”.
He added that within a period of 48 hours, an average of one Syrian is killed in 25 minutes and one wounded every 13 minutes.
The UN envoy also said that reduction of the hostilities level beyond what is currently seen will be needed so as the peace talks go on successfully.
He briefed the press after the third talks this year between main players in the conflict.
Mr. Mistura said that there was no mentioning of people in the talks and who is doing what. The focus was on how to change the present governance.
It is expected that more talks will be held before July.
