NEW DELHI: In a not so often happening incident, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi has on Friday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his office to discuss the farmers’ issues. Sources said that the meeting between the two top politicians went smoothly with the Prime Minister asking Rahul Gandhi to meet him whenever he gets time.
The surprising interaction came at a time when the Congress Vice-President claimed that he had evidence against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prove his ‘corruption in office’. He went on to say that the evidence can cause an earthquake in the ruling government adding that he was waiting for the right time to make it public.
According to the reports, the meeting between the two leaders was on the issues faced by farmers. Rahul Gandhi requested the Prime Minister to waive farmers’ loans as soon as possible, to which the Prime Minister has listened to without giving any response. “He kept listening to me without giving any response. We hope that there will be a positive step from the government. We highlighted the farmers’ issues and urged that the loan amounts be completely waived off”, the Congress Vice-President said.
“We also expressed our concern on removing the import duty on Wheat. There is no need for it at this time. when the farmers are in distress, instead of giving them some hope the ruling party is indirectly encouraging farmer suicides by adopting anti-farmer measures”, said Rahul Gandhi.
Last week, the Indian government has completely scrapped the existing import duty on Wheat to facilitate the increase in Wheat import. The decision was made taking into account the rise in domestic Wheat price and a decrease in buffer Wheat stocks following two years of drought.
However, the Congress party alleged that there was adequate buffer stock and the decision to remove import duty will lead to foreign countries dumping cheap quality of Wheat into the Indian markets.
