Two years have passed ever since Atletico Madrid’s heart was broken.
Time may have gone by but the scars are still burning hot — and perhaps it would serve their opponents well to remember that.
The opportunity still remains for their coach Diego Simeone, a sports-man known for kicking every ball, making every tackle and being a superb cheerleader for his boys.
Atletico Madrid may have been dreaming of someday going back to Estadio de Luz. The La Liga had already been secured, going past the gates of the giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. But the most prestigious title was within their sight.
When Diego Godin made the 38th minute lead, it seemed that Atletico Madrid would win the European crown and deny Real their unprecedented 10th title – something they badly craved for.
But that was not to happen yet because Sergio Ramos, Real’s defender, scored a goal with the assist of Luka’s corner. This forced an extra time that made the team score three more – without reply.
Atletico’s dreams were shattered.
On a revenge mission
Two years have now gone by and Atletico is still on course for the final. They have overcome the might of Barcelona in the quarterfinal.
Saul Niguez stroke in the 11th minute and gave Atletico a 1 – 0 victory – keeping them a short distance from redemption.
“He (Saul Niguez) is in a brilliant moment,” Filipe Luis, the Atletico defender said.
“He is a good guy, he’s young but with his feet on the ground, today he had no fear, he went one-on-one with everyone
“I think it was a really beautiful goal, one of the best in this Champions League.”
Had a strike from Fernando Torres not hit the post after the forward weaved through Bayern defense line, the win would have been even more emphatic.
Atletico are currently second in La Liga and their form is fine.
“We played to win and to score and not concede,” Jan Oblak, the Atletico goalkeeper, told BT Sport.
“It was very important to score that goal, Saul did a great job. Bayern is an amazing team with amazing players, but all our players showed we can stop them and I hope that in the next game we will do it again. “We respect them but we never have fear.”
