The Laureaus World Sports Awards is usually held so as celebrate the success that various sportswomen and sportsmen have had all over the world. The awards will go back to Berlin, Germany. The date for the event is set to 18th April 2016.
The biggest names in the sports are expected to grace the occasion. Both the past and present sportspersons will be in the occasion. The colorful occasion will have a global online and television audience.
The last time the occasion was held in Germany was in the year 2012 in London. Back then, the biggest names in sports too attended. Some of the leading places where the event has happened are Shanghai and Rio de Janeiro.
The award is comprised of 7 categories and will celebrate the achievements of sportswomen, sportsmen, action, Team of the Year, Disability athlete from the year 2015. The greatest sports breakthrough of 2015 will also be recognized. The sportspersons that had a great come back will equally be awarded.
Several great names have been mentioned as winners of the Laureaus Award. They include: Alex Ferguson, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Usain Bolt, Lewis Hamilton, roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Michael Schumacher. As you can see, the awards include greats that began in 2000.
After nomination voting done by 2000 World’s sports media, the next stage will be selection of the winners. The process will involve secret ballot voting by a jury of 55 members from the Laureus Sports Academy. The academy consists of living sports legends.
As the successes of greatest athletes in the world are celebrated, the Awards will have a big impact at the grassroots level. It will in the process support the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
The foundation has by far offered a helping hand to over 150 community sports projects. Millions of lives throughout the world have been touched in the process.
69 sport projects at the community level in Germany have been supported by the Foundation. The young people have ended up getting education while the community coming together. Social challenges including discrimination, integration and juvenile crime have been tackled too. Good Foundation has impacted more than 50,000 young people in Australia and Germany since it was incepted in 2001.
The Laureus World Sports Academy is chaired by Edwin Moses. He is a two-time Olympic gold medalist. He is optimistic that the 2016 Awards will turn out successful.
The Berlin Mayor, Michael Mueller, is looking forward to the event. He is of the opinion that the Awards’ spirit perfectly fit in a city such as Berlin. He would love it to be a memorable occasion.
In 2000, the Laureus Awards were inaugurated by Nelson Mandela. He later on became the patron of the awards. His speech turned out to set the philosophy that Laureus uses. Mandela said that the world can be changed through the power of sports. It is a unifying factor and also a source of hope in situations where there is despair.
