After having thrashed the battling Swansea City 3 – 1 at the Stamford Bridge, Chelsea has widened their lead at the top of the Premier League table to 11 points.
Cesc Fabregas had a joyous moment as he scored his 300th goal of the EPL, a goal which gave the Blues an early lead in the match, reports ESPN FC.
But the host were mesmerized when Swansea replied with an equalizing goal in what could be termed one of their most serious attempt on target. The equalizer was scored by Fernando Llorente who headed in Gylfi Sigurdsson’s free-kick.
Fabregas then made a second brave shot on target which hit the bar. Pedro then helped restore the lead and Diego Costa netted in a goal that effectively sealed the lead.
Swansea were denied a penalty when Cesar Azpilicueta handled inside the area at 1-1.
Chelsea is on fire
Antonio Conte’s boys played a great match but had the penalty been awarded just some few minutes before the second Chelsea goal, then the outcome would have been quite different.
However, this win was well-deserved and it earned Chelsea its 10th home victory in the EPL and marked a major step in clinching this season’s title.
The Blue seem to be on fire as they bag in success on a weekend when the first major silverware of the season – the EFL Cup – is handed out at Wembley. They have managed to get 63 points out of the 26 games played so far. This is more than what they earned during the 2014/2015 season when they also won the EPL.
Fabregas seemed unstoppable and he would have scored four goals had it not been for one that hit the bar, one denied by former Arsenal team-mate Lukasz Fabianski and the on-target shot deflected behind.
The restoration to a 2 – 1 lead was basically after an error by the opponents but the precise timing by Eden Hazard to pass the ball to Costa who scored the 3rd goal was delightful.
Chelsea had to toil to bag in the three points after Swansea City put forward a spirited fight. The side was not only well organized but also overly energetic. The Swans were basically a complete opposite of a team that was tailing the premier league table.
Their four-point safety cushion at the start of the day is down to three, but boss Paul Clement will have been pleased with the way his side frustrated the runaway leaders for long spells.
The sudden equalizer was a complete shock to Chelsea, who visibly appeared desperate to score.
The upcoming 4 matches for Swansea are promising and they can change this to their advantage to escape relegation.
Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas was the Man of the Match.
