DELHI: South Africa’s defensive batting approach on Day 4 of the final test against India has surprised both the Indian players and the cricket analysts, as the Safaris scored only 72 runs in as many overs, frustrating the Indian bowlers. The more surprising fact is the defensive batting approach of AB de villiers, who is known for his aggressive style of play.
At the conclusion of the morning session on Day 5 of the final test, AB de villiers scored only 43 runs after facing 288 balls with a strike rate of 14.93. Skipper Hashim Amla too, has scored 24 runs from 244 balls before getting bowled by Ravindra Jadeja.
Earlier on Day 4, the Indian team has declared their innings at 267/5 setting South Africa a 450+ target to chase. It can be understood that the South Africans have made up their mind to play for a draw as chasing 450+ score on a slowing pitch at Kotla will be a difficult task.
Interestingly, the South African batting lineup has come up with a more defensive tactic, blocking every bowl coming to their end. As of now, South Africans are batting at 135/5 with AB de villier(43) and Dane Vilas(12) at crease.
So far Jadeja had succeeded in breaking the overnight defensive partnership of AB de villiers and Hashim Amla, after trying a number of variations. later on, Jadeja has also emerged victorious in getting a LBW appeal against Faf du plessis in his favor.
Faf du plessis was immediately followed by JP Duminy off Ashwin’s bowling. India needs to bowl out South Africa by the end of the day 5, to win the series 3-0.
