VISAKHAPATNAM: An unbeaten century knock from Indian skipper Virat Kohli (151) with the likes of Chateswar Pujara (119) has placed India in a comfortable position in the second test of the Paytm Test series against England in Vizag. Though the Indian innings looked shaken up losing both the openers in quick succession, it is the double-century partnership of Virat Kohli and Pujara, which helped India to post a total of 317/4 on Day 1.
Earlier, winning the crucial toss on the slower Vizag pitch Captain Virat Kohli chose to bat first. There were a few changes to the Indian side with KL Rahul replacing Gautam Gambhir and Jayant Yadav making his debut with Amit Mishra standing out.
Despite coming back into the team replacing veteran Gautam Gambhir, Opener KL Rahul has nothing to do much in the first innings as he returned to the pavilion for a duck off Stuart Broad’s bowling. He was immediately followed by Murali Vijay (20). Though Aderson troubled the Indian batting in the initial stage, Virat Kohli and Pujara made sure that they did not lose another wicket by approaching the game with a strong defense.
The duo added 226 runs for the third wicket leaving Alastair cook to rotate his bowlers in every possible way. The partnership came to an end in the 66th over, when Anderson scalped Pujara’s wicket with a catch to Bairstow. Ajinya Rahane (23), initially supported the skipper well but has eventually fallen to Andersen continuing his poor form from the Rajkot test.
Ravichandran Ashwin, the next man in, came ahead of Wriddhiman Saha and concluded Day 1 with captain Virat Kohli. India will look to add as many runs as possible on Day 2 as the Vizag pitch is traditional known to assist spinners from Day 3. Which means that there are chances to finish the game within four days, without India coming to bat for the second time!
James Anderson (3/44) lead the England bowling attack on Day 1. He was assisted by Stuart Broad (1/39). The English have bowled with discipline despite a double-century partnership between Pujara, as they gave only three extras in 90 overs.
