MUMBAI: Former Australian skipper and the head coach of the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians, Ricky Ponting, opined that Rahul Dravid will be the best choice to coach the Indian cricket team in the future.
“It is not my decision. It all depends on what the BCCI wants. They are the decision makers and will depend on whether they need a foreign coach or the one from their home land. If the BCCI considers the option of getting an insider to do the job for the Indian cricket team, then I am pretty sure that Dravid will be the best suited for this”, Ponting said addressing the media.
“It also depends on what the captain wants. I think that the board will definitely listen to the Test captain (Virat Kohli) for making the final decision. In fact, Rahul has all the capabilities to coach any other cricket team in the World. He is a classy player in his time and I am sure that the board will definitely consider his appointment as the team Coach.
When asked about the Day/Night Ashes test series, Ponting said that he is not in favor of introducing new variations in the Ashes. “Ashes is something traditional. It has a wide fan following. We see fully packed stadia during the Ashes test series. The television viewers are also high. So, I don’t think that the Ashes need any type of boosting. It should remain like that, ‘traditional’ as far as I am concerned”.
“I can see that the Indian Cricket board too is interested in hosting Day/Night test matches. Let us see how it comes along”, the retired cricketer concluded.
