JAKARTA: Indian Ace Badminton star Saina Nehwal created history by becoming the first Indian to reach the finals of the World Badminton Championships here on Saturday, assuring herself of a silver medal from here.
The World No.2 Saina Nehwal, defeated the Indonesia’s Lindaweni Fanetri by 21-17, 21-17. This marked a memorable day for Saina, on the Independence day of her country.
Saina Nehwal will face the World No.1 and the defending champion Carolina Marin of Spain in the World Badminton Championship finals on Sunday.
This would be India’s fifth medal at the World Badminton Championship. Earlier, PV Sindhu clinched the bronze twice in 2013 and 2014 editions. While Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa notched up a bronze in women’s doubles at the 2011 edition. Legendary shuttler Prakash Padukone, was the first Indian to win a medal at the World Badminton Championships. He won a bronze medal in the 1983 edition, the NDTV Sports reports.
