Defending the pitch at Nagpur, where the third test between India and South Africa is being played, Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said that he did not expect so much of debate on just the nature of pitch rather than the performance of players.
“I don’t know why there’s so much of debate around this wicket here(Nagpur). The pitch assists spin and bounce. It has both spin and bounce, i don’t know why all are worried about the nature of the pitch rather than the performance of the players. You see, cricket is played with bat and ball between two teams and not based on pitches. Pitch is not the criteria to decide a team’s win. Both the teams have to play on the same pitch and the one who produces their best on that particular day, wins the match”, Ashwin said.
When asked about Ashwin’s role in asking for a particular pitch, he replied ” Unfortunately or fortunately i don’t have the option to ask for a particular pitch. All that i do is come and play my game on a pitch produced by the curator. Some are complaining that the tests are wrapping up in just three days, but let me remind you of the green pitches when we played in Johannesburg and Trent bridge. I was left out of the team for one year after that particular match. No one responded when the match concluded in just two days at Trent Bridge. It was full of swing and bounce there so what’s wrong with spin and bounce here”, he added.
“More or less, a capable batsmen must be mentally prepared to bat on any kind of pitch he ought to play in a match. Just like we bowl irrespective of the pitch conditions. That’s what tests you and that is why we call it a test match. Test your skills and develop your skills”, Ashwin concluded.
India looks to seal the series after winning the third test against South Africa at Nagpur. This series will be followed by a high-voltage Indo-Pak tour in Srilanka from December 15th.
