Blackberry is a global leader in when it comes to mobile communications. The brand BlackBerry was first introduced in 1999. Its goal at the moment is to push beyond boundaries in mobile communication so as to inspire its customers. This company was established in 1984 and has its headquarters in Waterloo, Ontario.
In the year 2015, BlackBerry made some three major acquisitions. These are what we are going to have a look at in this article and figure out whether they were worth it.
The three acquisitions that the company made in 2015 are:
- ATHOC, Inc.
- Good Technology
- WatchDox Ltd.
Let’s us take a look at the individual acquisitions as we expound more on each.
BlackBerry Acquires ATHOC
The global leader in mobile communications announced in the year 2015, 23rd Sept its acquisition of AtHoc. AtHoc is a company that provides secure, networked crisis communications. The purchase will see AtHoc function as a division of BlackBerry. The CEO of AtHoc remains the leader of this unit.
The purpose of the ATHOC software is to make it possible for people, organizations, and devices to make exchanges of critical information in life safety operations and business continuity. The customers of ATHOC are found both in the public and the private sector. It is the leading provider of crisis communications in the US. To prove its significance, the company was selected by TSA so as to offer secure crisis communications to all the staff of TSA across over 200 airports. TSA in refers to US Transport Security Administration.
BlackBerry acquired this technology so as to support its mission of offering secure communication solutions to its customers. A new application from the company may integrate the technology so as to enhance distribution of documents securely whenever there is an emergency situation.
ATDOC’s portfolio will be maintained as it is. The feature that is kept as it was is ATHOC Connect TM, a platform with which organizations can use to establish a personalized, secure, community of individuals that is permission-based and messages will be shared with them in real-time.
The question that some may ask themselves is, was this acquisition worth it? The answer is a simple yes. The technology will without any doubt assist BlackBerry to meet its goals of providing reliable and secure communications which people can even bet their life on it. This will turn out beneficial to them as they are likely to maintain their customers and get new ones that are in the regulated industries.
Acquisition of WatchDox
This acquisition was made on May 7th, 2015. It was BlackBerry’s earliest 2015 acquisition. What drove the company to this deal is the need to offer a very secure end-to-end communication.
Various analysts in the industry have had positive reviews about WatchDox. Forrester indicated that it was a reliable performer. The technology makes it shared files, both on desktop and mobile devices to travel with security. The organization is thus able to control how the data flow, how they are copied, printed, edited and also forwarded. The capabilities that the technology provides do meet the standards set by FIPS, Federal Information Processing Standards.
BlackBerry aims at integrating WatchDox solutions via BES12. Also, the technology will be made available independently to complement Blackberry’s EMM portfolio.
The terms of this transaction were kept private. There are differing opinions on this acquisition as some claim BlackBerry did not have to, considering they already have the EMM portfolio. In my view, it was a good transaction. When an organization shares data outside its walls, that helps improve the productivity of its workforce in a very significant manner. At the same time, the organization opens itself to very critical financial and reputation risk. With this technology, BlackBerry gains the capability to offer the security that it has always provided to its customers.
BlackBerry Acquires Good Technology
On 2nd Nov 2015, BlackBerry announced its acquisition of Good Technology. This was the last acquisition that the company made in 2015. The main purpose was again to offer security across devices no matter what the operating system is. The transaction was made at a cost of $425M.
Both the BlackBerry solutions and the Good Technology solutions complement each other. When put together, BlackBerry gets the ability to solve a major challenge that CIOs have always encountered. Ensure that there is deployment security, no matter what operating system is involved.
Thus, the decision has brought together two major mobile security companies so that cross-platform EMM solution is assured.
In conclusion, these are quite important purchases that BlackBerry made in 2015. Just like in any transaction, there is high anticipation within BlackBerry that there will be benefits resulting from the acquisitions. All that we can do is to wait until the closing of the first year and we shall see how it plays out.
