This weekend, a full moon and comet are to share double billing in what is known to be a special night sky show.
On Friday night, a lunar eclipse will start everything off. The expats say that the moon will pass into the outer shadow of the Earth which is also known as penumbra. The moon will not be blacked out as it happens in the full eclipse, but only one part of it will be shaded. This will be easily visible for the most part of the world.
Meanwhile, comet 45P is expected to zoom past Earth on Saturday early in the morning. This will be an extremely close encounter as the comet will pass 7.7 million (12.4 million Kilometers) of Earth with a relative speed of 14.2 miles per second, or a breakneck speed of 51,120 mph.
The comet, which is expected to glow green will be visible the constellation Hercules. Binoculars and Telescopes will be used to help in the search.
For the past couple of months, Stargazers have been tracking the comet 45P. The ice ball-an estimated mile across is said to come around after every five years. It is officially recognized as Comet 45P or Honda-Mrkos-Pajdusakova. It was named after the Japanese, Czech and Solvak astronomers who had made the discovery about it in the year 1948. The letter “P” in the name Comet 45P stands for periodic, which means that it is a recurring visitor to the inner solar system.
A live broadcast for these big events will be provided by the Slooh network of observatories.
The eclipse is expected to last for more than four hours as from 5.32 PM EST. This will unfold early Saturday in Africa, Western Asia and Europe
