Since its launch in the Indian market, telecom operator Reliance Jio has been making headlines for one or the other reasons. In the latest development, sources close to the Reliance Jio’s management have confirmed that the company will soon be launching a VoLTE supported ‘feature phone’ priced as low as Rs 1000!. The feature phone, with smartphone features of VoLTE calling and video calling, can be used to make unlimited calls and browsing on Reliance Jio’s network just like any other user using a smartphone.
The decision of Reliance Jio to launch the cheapest 4G phone in India is to tap the feature phone market, which still rules the Indian telecom sector. According to the Jio’s analysis, more than 50% of the Indian population uses feature phones mainly to make voice calls. However, Reliance Jio does not support the existing feature phones which work on 2G or 3G networks. Therefore, in a bid to attract the non-smartphone users Reliance Jio has reportedly decided to launch a budget 4G phone which supports voice calling over VoLTE network. At present, Reliance Jio is the only operator in India to provide VoLTE services.
“In India, people who use feature phones are quite more than the actual smartphone users. They use phones chiefly for voice calls. If we are able to tap into that market, it will be much easier for us to reach the estimated 100 crore customer base target within no time”, said an employee aware of developments inside Reliance Jio.
“In line with this idea, the company will soon launch India’s cheapest 4G phone which can be priced as low as Rs 1000. Jio will also be aiming to launch another two budget phones in the coming months”,he confirmed.
