Elon Musk and a group of other tech giants have begun a $1 billion fund to attempt to make robots that won’t kill humanity.
Mr. Musk has constantly warned about the dangers of artificial intelligence, calling them humanity’s biggest threat. A variety of other famous technologists and scientists have warned about these dangers, including Stephen Hawking.
OpenAI, the newly-launched company, will make use of large sets of data to build artificially intelligent robots that will not kill humans.
The goal of OpenAI is to advance digital intelligence in a way that has the best chance to benefit humanity as a whole, unhindered by a need to generate financial return, according to its website.
The new company hopes that it will be able to work against big companies like Facebook and Google – both of which have large artificial intelligence operations – obtaining too much power from super-intelligence systems. Governments may also utilize the power of artificial intelligence to oppress their citizens, the founders of OpenAI have warned.
Elon Musk as well as a variety of other backers is funding the company, OpenAI. Those backers include a startup funding programme, YCombinator, which has stakes in some of the most dominant technology companies.
Both Elon Musk and YCombinator will share the data that their companies generate with other artificial intelligence firms. That will mean, for example, that everything on Reddit could be given to the robots to assist in their learning.
Sam Altman from YCombinator stated that the Reddit data would be a very useful training tool, for example.
In addition, Elon Musk will hand over data from his projects, including SpaceX’s rockets and Tesla’s self-driving cars.
Mr. Altman stated that one can imagine all of the self-driving car video information from Tesla being very beneficial and that large amounts of data are very important.
